TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Savannah State Baseball team unleashed a 19 hit attack to cruise to a 20-9 win over the Florida A&M Baseball team here Sunday afternoon at Moore-Kittles Field.
FAMU (1-5) finished with 16 hits as both Steve Cunningham and Corey McFadden had three hits apiece.
SSU (5-2) was paced by Kyle Wilkerson with four hits, followed by Alford Arnold with three hits.
Robert Ramsdale (2-0) got the win for the Tigers, giving up 14 hits, five earned runs and striking out three in five innings of work, while Anthony Espin (0-2) took the loss for the Rattlers, giving up three hits, three earned runs and striking out three in one inning of work.
SSU took the early 3-0 lead in the top of the first, when Wilkerson scored on a wild pitch. Then an Arnold RBI single would score Santos Adames, followed by Brandon Javis scoring on a passed ball.
FAMU would the knot the score at 3-3 in their half of the first inning on a Timothy Schalch RBI single scoring Cunningham, who doubled. Then both Schalch and Thaddous McBurrows would both score on a Tim Jones double to center field.
The Tigers would regain the lead in the top of the second inning on a Wilkerson three-run homer to left field, giving SSU a 6-3 lead.
The Rattlers put two more runs on the board in the bottom of the second on a SSU infielder's error scoring Adam Gordon, followed by a Darryl Evans RBI single up the middle scoring Cuninngham, cutting the Tigers' lead to 6-5.
SSU would score five runs in the top of the third to take a 11-5 lead, sparked by a Dexter Kelley homer.
The Tigers plated three more runs in the top of the fourth to increase their lead to 14-5. A wild pitch scored Wilkerson, then a Javis RBI double scored Adames, before Javis scored on a passed ball.
FAMU picked up a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth as Jared Jeffries scored on a SSU infielder's error, then a Chris Fullman RBI single would score Cunningham, cutting the Tigers' lead to 14-7.
The Rattlers plated two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on a Jeffries RBI double scoring McFadden, then Jeffries would score on a Cuninngham RBI single, cutting the Tigers' lead to 14-9.
SSU would score a run in the sixth, two in the seventh, one in the eighth and two in the ninth for the 20-9 final.
FAMU will return to action in a two game series against Mercer University on Tuesday March 4 at 4 p.m. and at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 5 in Macon, Ga.
