TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Florida A&M Softball team in two games combined for 48 runs and 41 hits as they swept Savannah State 26-5, 22-0 in a doubleheader, here Saturday afternoon at the Lady Rattler Softball Complex.

Tiffany Chan (4-10) picked up the win in the opener for the Lady Rattlers, giving up three earned runs, two hits and striking out three in two innings of work, while Rachel West (1-11) took the loss for the Lady Tigers, giving up eight earned runs in four inning of work.

FAMU (8-21) finished with 23 hits lead by Alacia Strafford , who finished four-of-five from the plate, with a grand slam homer. Both Chan and Melissa Oliphant finished with three hits apiece. In addition, Oliphant finished with an inside park homer.

SSU (3-23) finished with four hits led by Chere Chillis with two hits, while Jessalyn Ross and Alvita Williams finished with one hit each.

In game one, SSU took the early lead in the top of the first inning as a Chillis RBI single scored Shamyra Adams. Then a Williams RBI double scored both Jessalyn Ross and Alexis Carson, giving the Lady Tigers a 3-0 lead.

FAMU would pound out 16 runs in the bottom of the second inning to regain the lead, capped by a Brittany Newby RBI double scoring Joyce Harold, giving the Lady Rattlers a 16-3 lead.

The Lady Rattlers picked three more runs in the bottom of the third inning on an Alesha Wells RBI triple scoring Alex Rolle-Polk. Wells would then score on an Ashley Bell RBI grounder, followed by a Chan RBI single scoring Alacia Strafford, giving FAMU a 19-3 lead.

FAMU plated seven more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning for the eight-run mercy rule to go into effect for the 26-5 final.

In game two, FAMU garnered 18 hits, while SSU finished with two.

The Lady Rattlers were paced by Ashley Smith with four hits, followed by Nikki Terryn and Strafford with three hits each.

The Lady Tigers finished with two hits with Ross and Chillis finishing with one hit each.

In an explosive first inning, FAMU scored 11 runs capped by a Richardson RBI single scoring Brittney Newby, giving the Lady Rattlers a 11-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second inning, the Lady Rattlers plated seven runs in to increase their lead to 18-0, sparked by a Rhianna Green two-run homer.

FAMU scored four more runs in the bottom of the third for the 22-0 final with the eight-run mercy run to go into effect.

The Lady Rattlers will return to action against Troy University in a doubleheader on Monday at 4 p.m. in Troy, Ala.
