TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The University of Connecticut Women's Softball Team swept a doubleheader from Florida A&M, 7-0 and 8-0 Wednesday afternoon at the Lady Rattler Softball Complex.
Florida A&M (3-16), finished the day with seven total hits, led by right fielder Rhianna Green with three hits and short stop Joyce Harold with two hits.
UConn (7-10) had 19 hits combined in the two games, getting 10 hits in the 7-0 opening win, and nine hits in the nightcap, which went five innings via the eight-run rule.
Connecticut's Julianne Towers led the Huskies with six hits in eight at-bats, scoring four runs and driving in a pair. Melissa Lucas and Sarah Neushwander each had three hits, with Neushwander driving in three runs.
FAMU pitcher Tiffany Chan (3-7) took the loss in the opener, fanning three and allowingt 10 hits and seven runs. Chan was pitching a shutout until the sixth, when UConn struck for two runs, adding five more in the seventh.
UConn's Tricia Sullivan (5-4) went the distance, scattering five hits in seven innings, fanning 10 against one walk.
In the second game, FAMU's Ashley Jones (1-5) worked two and two-thirds innings, giving up eight runs on nine hits with one strikeout against six walks before being lifted for Chan in the third inning. Chan tossed two and one-third innings of no-hit, shutout ball facing just seven batters.
UConn's Rachel Crossin (4-2) tossed a two-hitter, fanning six while walking just two in five innings of work Wednesday.
WHAT'S NEXT: FAMU heads south to the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Florida for six games between Friday and Sunday.... They return home for a four-game stretch next week, hosting Jackson (Miss.) State in a Tuesday twinbill (3:00) and Savannah State (1:00) in a Saturday doubleheader on March 22.
