TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Florida A&M Women's Track team turned in a strong performance this weekend at the 58th Annual FAMU Relays, snapping up 15 Top Ten finishes, including five first place victories.
Coach Maicel Malone's crew prevailed despite dodging severe weather on Friday and windy conditions on Saturday, with two of the five winners close to NCAA regional qualifying marks.
•Senior Ashley Gillis won the 100 meter dash final in 11.89, just .14 off the regional qualifying mark to 11.75, while freshman Conchita Russell won the 100 meter hurdles in 14.32 seconds, just short of the 13.92 needed for regional competition.
•The other Lady Rattler victors included Shakia Smith in the discus (125 feet, 11 inches); Jeanna Dorcelin in the 400 meter hurdles (1:03.02) and the 4x800 meter relay "A" team, which won in 9:49.77.
In the relays, the distance medley team (2nd, 13:18.64), the sprint medley "A" team (3rd, 4:20.01), the 4x100 relay (4th, 48.38) and the 4x400 relay (5th, 3:59.78) all finished in the top five in their events.
